Knit-Noi

Care kits for mothers in poverty giving birth at Umphang Hospital, on the Thai–Burmese border.

The Knit-Noi kit bag, illustrated with a mother cradling her newborn

The Umphang district sits on the Thai–Burmese border. Its name is believed to come from the Karen word umpa, the act of opening a bamboo container — once used to show passports to Thai immigration officers. Most of its people are hill tribes, stateless people and Burmese migrants, living side by side, respectfully and peacefully.

Umphang Hospital is one of only four hospitals in the entire district and delivers more than 900 babies a year. We worked with the hospital to understand what new mothers with very limited access to basic needs were missing — then sourced it and packed it, with care, into a Knit-Noi Kit.

Each kit includes 100% cotton baby clothing and diapers, a hand-knitted beanie, maternity pads and a reusable pouch. Volunteers knit the beanies and write a message to each mother at our Knit-Noi workshops. One kit costs ฿399, covering its contents and a donation to Umphang Hospital; all overhead is sponsored by DTCF.
